چکیده

As part of an NSF-funded IT Workforce grant, the authorsconducted ethnographic research to provide deep understandingof the learning environment of computer science classrooms.Categories emerging from data analysis included impersonalenvironment and guarded behavior, and the creation andmaintenance of informal hierarchy resulting in competitivebehaviors. These communication patterns lead to a defensiveclimate, characterized by competitiveness rather cooperation,judgments about others, superiority, and neutrality rather thanempathy. The authors identify particular and recognizabletypes of discourse, which, when prevalent in a classroom, canpreclude the development of a collaborative and supportivelearning environment.
